SUMMARY

The concept of household draws attention to basic issues of provisioning and resourcing the everyday lives of people who are co-resident. Key questions concern the criteria by which to determine whether a co-resident group constitutes a household, while contemporary language often equates households with ‘families’ and ‘homes’. Government censuses and surveys tend to focus more on ‘households’ than ‘families’, on the presumption that households can be more clearly defined, but even these administrative definitions have changed over time in response to the shifting patterns of people’s everyday lives and relationships. Around the world, households may concern more complex arrangements, with several kinship or household groups being organized around one physical site, such as a compound, which may be structured by reference to particular lines of descent, or lineage.
